Ordinarily, you might think that an interview is just an opportunity for the company to get to know you. After all, it is through this process that they’ll determine that you’re the right fit for the job. As such, you might never prepare any questions you should ask in an interview.

However, it shouldn’t be so. Business is an exchange involving two or more people. This means that they have just as much to gain from you as you have to gain from them. So, you need to ask questions to figure out if this is the best job for you. To get you started, here are some questions you should ask in an interview.

1. What do the daily responsibilities look like?

This is one of the questions you should ask in an interview because it’s one of the most important. If you do get the job, asking this question will help you prepare your mind for what to expect. Your interviewer should be able to succinctly explain what it’s like to work on the job every day.

2. What is your definition of an excellent employee?

This one is equally important. Now, if your employer tells you about how an employee should be able to work several hours beyond closing time without complaining and how s/he shouldn’t disturb management for raises, this is a bad sign. It means that you wouldn’t be considered an excellent employee unless you meet those conditions. Now, tell us, is that really what you want? Do you really want to work long hours with insufficient compensation?

3. What would you say your values are as a company?

Assuming your interviewer skipped this question for you, you shouldn’t skip it for them. Ask them what their own values are as a company. Dig deep and try to find out what drives the company to do what it does. If they answer you properly, you’ll know if the company aligns with your personal goals and values.

4. What is your favorite part about working here?

This one is important for a one-on-one interview. Your interviewer will definitely answer. But, it’s how they answer that you need to pay attention to. If they answer with a lot of enthusiasm, you should be excited. If they don’t, something might be wrong, and it might indicate that employee satisfaction isn’t particularly high.

5. What’s the most challenging part of this job?

Asking this question calmly will help you get an insight into what you have ahead. So, ask and find out what you need to start worrying about before getting the job.
