Thriving in the Midst of Hardship

By Julius

Being able to persevere through enormous difficulty and overwhelming obstacles is the key to thriving in the face of hardship. In actuality, not everyone has the ability to achieve while under pressure. Some people will begin the journey but quit. Those who give up midway in their trip are greater than the percentage of individuals who ultimately succeed.Imagine the course of a marathon competition, for example. As you will acknowledge, there are a lot of people who enter for the race but just three individuals who won endured the energy-sapping race to the end.Another truth is that many people desire success or admire the idea of success but only a few are ready to pay the price. Paying the price despite the odds is what will make you thrive. That is what will make you rise above excuses, procrastination, fear, doubt and every other thing you can think of as obstacles to thriving.Hardship isn’t entirely a bad phenomenon. There are some ‘good’ hardships that are needed for the best version of an individual to evolve. Take for instance the disciple required of an athlete to emerge a winner. A serious and determined athlete will not feed on junks all through the period of training and then hopes to emerge the winner. Such an individual will only make a fool of himself in the track. If you must thrive, then you must settle it in your mind that you can’t just give up because you are experiencing hardship. Hardship itself is meant to help you build resilience, capacity and also stretch you to the point that you resolve in your mind that giving up at that time is a costly thing to do.Your focus should also shift from the temporal pain you’re experiencing and look to the end; that is the finish line. I heard the story of a religious leader who was from a very poor family. In his younger days, he took to picking firewood in the bush to support himself in school. At one of such times, he was stung by bees. I thought the first sensible thing to do in that situation is to first run. But no, our hero didn’t. He endured the bee sting as much as he could but took the firewood he had gathered and ran home. He didn’t want to lose the firewood as that would mean no money for him to pay in school. This is an example of thriving despite experiencing hardship.Yours may not be enduring bee stings. But if you must thrive, then you must be ready to deny yourself temporal pleasures because it is capable of hindering you. While it is good to enjoy life, there should be a place for discipline. Discipline will help you keep track of where you are and where you are going. The fear of starting out has limited many people. The fear of what people will say, what their reactions will be, what if I start and I can’t keep up are some of the excuses plaguing a good number of people. Such people will never build resilience when pressures start to mount up against their goal. Whatever your level in what you are trying to achieve, don’t give up. To give up is to kiss your dream good bye. Remember also that no one will celebrate failure. It is the success that you achieve that will make people accord you the respect and honour that you deserve.READ ALSO: Pack Wisely- 10 Essential Travel Items You Shouldn’t Overlook
