What are life lessons and why should you teach your son?
Dictionary.com defines life lessons as something from which useful knowledge and principles can be learned.
Life is not all about eating and drinking. We only need food and water to exist but that is not all that life requires. As a father, you have weathered several storms and experienced different situations. Some of which are pleasant while some are far from being pleasant. The essence of teaching life lessons to your son is to prevent him from making mistakes that you have made or teaching him to take steps that afford better results in life. A good father will desire that his son or children become better than he ever will be. If a father is great, it is expected that his son becomes greater. That is the essence of life lessons. However, that will be premised on whether the son imbibed the timeless principles of the father. So, below are six life lessons you should teach your son.
- Respect people
It is a common saying that respect is reciprocal. If you respect people, you also will be respected. However, if you disrespect people, expect to be disrespected likewise. Respecting people is not only giving honour to those who are older than you’re, it also includes giving honour even to the young.
2. Treat people right
I read about the story of an American senator who stood up for an elderly man to sit in the bus. The elderly man appreciated the young man’s gesture and decided to engage him in a conversation. It turns out the young man was seeking to gain admission to study law in the University but he was financially incapacitated. The elderly man wrote a note and gave it to him. That note secured admission for the young fellow who went to study law and ended up as a senator. Years later, this young man became a senator and he rendered assistance to a young man. It turned out to be the great grandson of the elderly man who helped him to study law. This shows that treating people right has a ripple effect.
3. Leave a place or things better than you met them
A revered pastor was sharing a principle about this point when he said he borrowed his friend’s car and the fuel gauge was almost empty. However, when he was through with what he needed the car for, he made sure to return it to the owner with a full tank. This is one life lesson that bestows a lot of blessings on you. It could be as simple as making a convenience neater than you met it or making sure you positively impact the life of the people you meet in a certain place.
4. Never raise your hand against a woman
Most sons raised in an abusive marriage may erroneously assume that beating a woman like his father does to his mum is a manly thing to do. Women are God’s special creatures inbuilt with word power. Their words could spur a man to a positive action and it can also bring the beast out of the same man. You should teach your son that raising his hand against a woman whether married to him or not is a taboo. It is a taboo to go physical against a woman. It is not a code that any man should live by.
5. Always tell the truth
It is said that a truthful man is never afraid. When you form the habit of being truthful, you ‘re never afraid of being found out. It is only people who have made lying their second nature that will always be afraid of being found out. A truthful man has no secrets. Telling the truth will give you rest of mind even if you ‘re punished for being truthful.
6. Believe in yourself
No one can chase your dreams for you except you, yourself. So, if you don’t believe in yourself, no one will repose their faith in you. While it is good to believe in others, you should first believe in yourself and in your God-given abilities. Doing this will make you surmount difficulties because your propelling force will strongly believe that you can be whatever you set your mind towards.
Conclusion
As I have stated earlier, life goes beyond eating and drinking. These are lessons that you can teach your son in order to be a better person in society. Life lessons like respecting people, treating people right, making something better than you met them, always telling the truth, never raising your hand against a woman and believing in yourself. Adhering to these life lesson principles will make you a better version of yourself.
