How To Prevent Cholera : 5 Healthy Tips For Men

By Julius

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease that is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated by a bacterium called Vibro cholerae. If left untreated, it can lead to death within a few hours. Cholera was prevalent in the U.S during the 1800s before treatment for modern water and sewage systems was introduced, which curtailed its spread. Some parts of Africa, South Asia and Latin America are still hotbeds for this disease. Currently in Nigeria, there is an outbreak of cholera in Lagos, arising from the consumption of unregistered tiger nut drink in the Eti Osa Local government of the state. Symptoms of Cholera • Watery Diarrhea  In  severe cases of cholera, an infected person will experience watery diarrhea. That is, stooling. • Vomiting Vomiting is another symptom of cholera. As the person is stooling, it will be followed by vomiting. • Loss of Skin Elasticity  This is the inability of the skin to return to its normal position when pinched.  • Dryness Another symptom is dryness. An infected person will experience dryness in the mucous membrane, dryness in the mouth, throat, nose and eyelids. • Low Blood Pressure  •  Low blood pressure is a condition in which the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls is too low. It’s also called hypotension. This is the after effect of dehydration in cholera. • Dehydration   Dehydration is the condition in which water in the body drops below normal levels, and this is another symptom of cholera. When a person is feeling dehydrated, it is most likely that it is cholera. • Dizziness  Dizziness will set in because there is loss of water in the body as a result of stooling. • Muscle Cramps This results from the rapid loss of salts such as sodium, chloride and potassium. Ways To Prevent Cholera In this article, I will be sharing with you five healthy tips to prevent cholera. 1. Practice Safe Hygiene As a man, one of the surest methods of preventing cholera is to practice safe hygiene. Cholera finds comfort and would thrive in a place where there is poor sanitation. Make sure you clean your environment. Wash dirty plates and wash your hands thoroughly with soap especially after using the toilet. This is because fecal material could help the spread of cholera. 2. Use Only Treated Water A contaminated water is the breeding ground for cholera. Hence, make sure that the water you drink, and the ones used for your cooking is treated properly either by boiling it or chemically disinfecting it. When you do this, you are permanently giving cholera a red card. 3. Avoid Contaminated Raw or Seafood Another breeding ground for cholera is raw or seafood caught in water polluted with sewage. When this is consumed, the bacteria releases a toxic substance into the intestine that causes severe diarrhea.  4. Avoid Raw Fruits and Vegetables  Most of the diseases affecting mankind are as a result of what we consume. It is practically difficult to identify vegetables that have been grown with human waste or uncomposted manure fertilizer. The best solution will be to grow your own vegetables. You do not need a vast portion of land to do it. You can start cultivating your own garden in your backyard. If this is not possible, then you must wash thoroughly and cook properly every vegetable you buy and wash thoroughly the fruits you eat. 5. Cook Your Own Meals If you are a bachelor, there is no crime if you cook your own meals as opposed to eating from food vendors. The reason is not far-fetched, you don’t know the kind of water used in preparing the food you are eating. So, to be sure you are consuming the best, cook your own meals because you cannot intentionally use dirty water to cook what you are going to consume by yourself. Conclusion  If you make cleanliness your everyday life, there is no way in which cholera or any other disease will bestride your doorstep. More so, if you are a foreigner visiting a cholera prone environment, do well to adopt the healthy tips listed above. READ ALSO: 6 Common Habits That Make You Look Older Than You Are
