How to Make Yourself an Asset in Any Setup

By Publisher

In any setup, be it an organisation, church, marriage, ministry, your street or wherever you find yourself, there are certain things you can do to make yourself an asset. An asset is something or someone that adds significant value and is highly prized or considered indispensable. When organisations are downsizing and they have to lay off people, they usually audit all the individuals on their payroll to see the ones they can do away with. While it is generally believed that nobody is indispensable, the truth is that in any setup, there are usually one, two or a few people whose absence will be felt greatly if they leave the setup. So when organisations are going to lay off, the first people to go are usually those who add little or no value to the overall setup. These people are called liability. They can go and the setup won’t feel the impact of their leaving. This shouldn’t be you. You ought to position yourself as an asset anywhere you are. In the course of my meditation, I have been able to identify 12 ways to make yourself a prized person or a valuable member of any team you find yourself.
1. You must be a solution provider, not a creator of problems
You must be the one that is helping to solve problems, not the one creating problems for your team or setup. This is one key attribute of people who are considered assets. Members of your organisation should not be busy managing the crises you created. When there is a need to downsize, people who create needless emergencies are usually the first to be shown the door. To be a solution provider, you should not just be someone who always talks out of the blue; your solution must have an empirical grounding and practical application. It must be founded on facts and principles. Your solution must be practical and designed to achieve desired results.
2. You must be a giver
Being an asset requires that you are more of a giver than a taker. You must not be the one that is always taking or constantly demanding. Nobody likes someone who is always exacting from and sapping their resources. If you must be an asset in any setup, you must be the one who is constantly giving – giving your time, resources, intellect, skills and abilities. You shouldn’t be the one who is always looking out for what to gain. Rather, you should be the one who donates and generously shares. This does not necessarily have to be in monetary terms; your time, intellect and attention are immense resources. The modern workplace is replete with a lot of getting mindset; if you must be an asset, you can’t afford to run with that mentality. You will not find assets leading a revolt and agitating for increased entitlements. Assets think in terms of what they are going to give, what they are going to do, what they are going to share, how they are going to add to the setup, the organisation and the people around them. You cannot be an asset when you hoard your knowledge and resources. Assets leave people better than they met them. When people encounter you, does their countenance brighten up? If you always leave people frowning, or worse off than you met them, you are not an asset.
3. You must help the setup to make profits and achieve goals
What you do to help the setup make profits varies based on the kind of operations they do. For instance, making profits for a business may be in financial terms while for a religious organisation, it may be in terms of increased membership. You must understand the context in which you are operating and help your setup to make profits, not incur losses. Some people are always incurring losses rather than bringing in profits. For you to be an asset, you must be on the profit-making side, not loss incurring side. Assets are the ones who help the setup to make profits and achieve its goals.
4. Assets help the setup to work or perform faster
Assets do not spend lots of time doing the same thing over and over. Rather, they get a lot of things done within a minimum time frame. They help to get work done faster, they don’t slow things down. You can slow things down by not paying attention to your own work or by distracting others. If you desire to be an asset, you must be on the side of those who help your company work faster and not the ones slowing down the process of work.To be continued
