3 Rules to Help you Rewrite your Mistakes

By Publisher

Mistakes are inevitably a part of life, but you cannot keep making the same mistake(s). A repeated mistake simply shows that you haven’t learned from a past experience. This was the reason William J. Clinton, an American ex-president aid, “If you live long enough, you’ll make mistakes. But if you learn from them, you’ll be a better person. It’s how you handle adversity, not how it affects you. The main thing is never quit, never quit, never quit.”Leaders are prone to making mistakes; this is because of the drive to actualise their visions. It could be a mistake in career, family, business or relationship. Such mistakes could be costly too. There are people who resigned earlier in their career and it was a mistake. There are those who made a critical decision in business and it turned out to be a big mistake that has affected every aspect of their lives. I once spoke to a man who was successful in his business venture about the mistake someone made in business and his response was, ‘I can’t make such mistakes because…’ he gave me so many reasons. Then I felt this man must be a special breed, there must be so many things to learn from him, not knowing that his was just around the corner. Two years later I met him again and this time the story had changed as he was struggling to meet up with his business because of a decision he took to relocate his business from Lagos to Abidjan in Cameroon. It was then I realised that with the wrong decision you could find yourself struggling even though you had good intentions. Here are a few tips that can help you rewrite your mistakes easily:1. Never quit: Some people make a bigger mistake by quitting due to a prior mistake. Not quitting affords you the opportunity to correct your mistake. 2. Learn from your experience: Not learning from your previous mistake is wrong and could lead to you making the same mistake. You should learn to study past mistakes, dissect them to know why they didn’t work, then create possible solutions for the future. You might ask, “What if the solution I created is not useful because I never get another opportunity?” More opportunities will come your way. You will always have a chance to use the solution you created.3. Stay free from fear: When you make a mistake, do not live in the fear of making another mistake. This can keep you in a particular position where you neither recover from your past mistake nor move on and make new decisions. You will eventually lose opportunities. People grapple with the fear of making the same mistake. Once you are able to overcome this fear, rewriting your past mistakes becomes very easy. You can rewrite your mistake for good by hanging on when the mistake is done, learning from your experience, and staying free from fear.“A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to learn from them and strong enough to correct them.” – John C Maxwell
